Terminal blocks are used as a modular, insulated block that secures two or more wires together. They’re extremely popular in a wide variety of applications, but there are many different types of terminal blocks that all vary in performance and use. So, what are terminal blocks used for? Continue reading to find out.
What are PCB terminal blocks?
One particularly popular type of terminal block is a printed circuit board (PCB) terminal block. A PCB terminal block enables easy and safe transmission of signals, data and power directly to the circuit board. It is a space-saving connection method that is suitable for a wide range of applications in the process industry and many other industrial environments.
Terminal blocks are used to secure and/or terminate wires and, in their simplest form, consist of several individual terminals arranged in a long strip. Terminals are especially useful for connecting wiring to a ground or, in the case of electrical power, for connecting electrical switches and outlets to the main.
What is a screw terminal block?
Another type of terminal block is a screw terminal block. It is an electrical connector where a wire is held in by the tightening of a screw. Printed circuit board terminal blocks are specially designed with a copper alloy pin of suitable size and length that can be inserted into PCBs to be soldered. This allows electrical signals and current to flow to and from PCBs and electrical equipment.
Some designs provide features that allow the flow of molten solder to create a better connection between the circuit traces of the board and the electrical equipment. This is meant to be controlled or fed appropriate power.
What are spring clamp plugs?
Spring clamp plugs are another type of terminal block known as screwless terminal blocks.
Screwless PCB terminal blocks are commonly used where high volume or quick assembly is needed. No tools are required to make a connection and they’re particularly useful in applications using small wire diameters and limited working space.
How safe are terminal blocks?
Terminal blocks are extremely safe when installed correctly. Once all of the connections have been made to the terminal block, a test on the equipment should be undertaken to ensure everything is working properly.
If everything is working how it should be, checks on the terminal block and the connections must be made to ensure that there is not an excessive build-up of heat, and that wires are all still securely in place.
